Why Pests Love the Holiday Season Too

While you’re getting ready for holiday festivities, in the background, some pests may be celebrating right along with you!

You may not realize it, but pests can be commonly introduced into your home via some surprising ways, such as your Christmas tree! Other easy access routes may originate from wreaths and firewood. Some pests can live deep in the crevices of wood. To prevent bringing pests into your home, inspect wood for eggs, pests and nests and shake off trees and greenery outdoors before bringing them inside.

Decorating your home and tree can bring much joy, but also can bring about another way in which pests can enter your living space. Boxes of decorations kept in storage areas such as garages, attics and basements are great places for pests to hide. Unpack any holiday decorations outside or in the garage and keep decorations sealed up in storage bins with tight-fitting lids for an extra dose of protection.

Looking forward to all of those holiday goodies? So are pests! It’s no secret that pests love FOOD. Before making those delicious treats, check your pantry for any expired ingredients and also check items that haven’t been used in awhile. For best pest prevention, keep food items stored in containers, clean up food messes and don’t let those dirty dishes sit overnight.

If you’re planning a holiday getaway, keep in mind that you may not escape hidden pests. Bed Bugs specialize in holiday travel and are sneaky hitchhikers. Bed Bugs travel easily in your luggage and personal belongings. If you’re checking in somewhere, put your luggage in the bathroom tub or elevated on a rack away from the bed and wall and closely inspect mattresses, paying special attention to crevices.  Perform an outside inspection of your luggage upon returning home.  Lastly, as an added safety measure, place dryer-safe clothing items in the dryer for 15 minutes or more on the highest setting.

All of us at Safeway Pest Management wish you a happy and pest-free holiday season!

Winter: To Pro Pest Manage or Not

The cold weather arrives and you begin to toss around the question:

“Do I really need professional pest management services in the winter?”

While we can’t answer that question for you, we can offer some information regarding winter pests and helpful tips to keep them at bay. Our friendly, knowledgeable advice and service options are only a phone call away, we are here to Give you Peace of Mind.

Unfortunately, not all pest problems occur during the warmer months. Insects such as bed bugs, cockroaches, various pantry invaders and fleas are year-round problems for many homeowners. Rodents, such as rats and mice, are also prevalent during the colder months and in search of warm harborages.

The best way to protect from pests such as these ever entering your home is to use some smart, early prevention methods. When followed, the suggestions below can reduce the chances of a pest infestation in your home.

  • Keep moisture in check by sealing any leaks and covering any liquids.
  • Make a seasonal plan to seal up any openings where pests can get inside. Openings that offer warmth are inviting to winter pests.
  • Keep food in airtight containers. Clean up spills and keep your sink and dishes clean.
  • Take garbage out regularly and store it in a sealed outdoor container.
  • Be vigilant of bed bugs while traveling over the holidays. Pack a flashlight and keep your luggage in the hotel bathroom while checking the beds for tiny black dots that resemble pepper. Pay special attention to the bed corners and seams.
  • Keep your pest specialist handy for year round advice and for all-season pest prevention and management solutions.

Preventing Pesky Pantry Pests

pantrypest.jpgFinding pantry pests while preparing a holiday meal can immediately curb any appetite. There are various varieties of pests that can invade food products, but the most common in Wisconsin are the Indian-meal moth, the Saw-toothed grain beetle, the Red flour beetle and the Cigarette beetle.

Although these pests are for the most part harmless, they are the last thing we want to see when we open a package of food.

Pantry pests are typically found in dry goods such as flour, pancake mix, cake mix, macaroni, cereals, dried fruit, spices, crackers and pet and bird food and surprisingly, even potpourri. Stored food insects will most likely infest opened products, but are capable of chewing their way inside or finding a way inside via a seam or fold in the packaging.

Food of any age can become infested, although food items that have been stored on shelves for long periods of time are most susceptible to infestation. Infestation can occur anywhere from the production process to storage on shelving in your home, but most infestations happen in store or in home.

Preventing Pantry Pests

  • Inspect packages for damage at the store before bringing them into your home. Look for any tears or openings on the packaging. Also check the freshness date.
  • Use oldest items in your pantry first. Rid your pantry of old, unused items.
  • Store items in airtight containers, especially if you buy in bulk.
  • Keep birdseed and pet food in closed containers and inspect those containers regularly.
  • Keep food storage areas clean. Vacuum any loose food remnants in cracks and corners.
  • Add a bay leaf to stored containers of dry goods such as flour and rice, the pungent smell repels many pantry pests.*
  • Call a licensed pest management company if you find a pantry infestation.
